While preparing for their mission to the South Pacific in 1843, Benjamin F. Grouard and his fellow missionaries lacked the necessary funds to secure passage. Grouard recorded that they were miraculously delivered from this situation when a man named Lewis donated $300 toward their passage and equipment, allowing them to proceed with their mission.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

We found by comparing we had not one half enough money to pay our passage, & we had no clothing nor any means of getting any neither did we know from whence our required help was coming, but we trusted in the Lord. . . . While waiting in this state of hope & anxiety, wondering from what source the Lord would send us the help he had promised us, Br. [Brother] Phillip B. Lewis engaged a passage to the Society Islands at $100 each for himself, Noah Rogers, Knowlton F. Hanks, and B. F. Grouard. . . . Lewis donated $300 towards their passage and fit out.

In Their Own Words

“Benjamin F. Grouard wrote of the situation and of their miraculous deliverance: Lewis donated $300 towards their passage and fit out. — Benjamin F. Grouard, as cited in Launching Mormonism in the South Pacific”
