Virginia Olmstead, an orphan with distinct hazel eyes, was being transported by her father on a train when it wrecked near Chicago, killing all in the chair cars. Mrs. Brown, who had previously tried to adopt Virginia, was on the train traveling to her mother's deathbed. Upon helping the injured, Mrs. Brown miraculously found Virginia alive and clutched in the arms of her deceased father. Virginia survived, was adopted by Mrs. Brown, and later became a successful student and entertainer.

In Their Own Words

“As you know, I was never dramatic, so I shall have to tell you of what happened on that fateful: morning in my own way, without embellishment. The mystery and marvel of it still overpower me when I think about it. I had relieved a poor woman and a little boy who were wounded and turned to a gray haired man with a little girl fast in his arms. The man was dead, I could see at a glance, but the child moaned, and stooping I turned her gently toward me * * * Mary, can you believe me when I tell you that I was gathering in my arms my own precious Virginia * * * hurt, but still alive, calling piteously for her father who would never speak to her again * * * She knew me at once, half dazed as she was, and I can never forget the clutch of her little fingers on my arm, the sudden joy in those warm yellow eyes. — The Young Woman's Journal 34:8”
