While residing in Kirtland, Ohio, Reynolds Cahoon had a son born to him. He took the infant to the Prophet Joseph Smith to receive a name and a priesthood blessing. During the blessing, Joseph Smith announced that the name of the child should be Mahonri Moriancumer. When Cahoon later inquired about the origin of this unusual name, Joseph Smith explained that it was the name of the Brother of Jared, which had been revealed to him by the Lord. This event is historically significant as it was the first time the name of the Brother of Jared was made known to the Church through revelation.
