Jacob Gates recorded that on April 11, 1834, he departed from St. Johnsbury, Vermont, with his young wife, Mary Snow Gates, to join the expedition to Missouri. He explicitly noted that this journey was undertaken in fulfillment of the revelation given on February 24, 1834 (now Doctrine and Covenants 103), which commanded the Saints to gather a company to redeem Zion and assist those driven from Jackson County.
