In his personal writings and the biographical sketch prepared by his son, Thomas Durham recorded experiencing distinct 'spiritual manifestations' during his youth and his mission for the Church in England prior to his emigration. These manifestations of the Holy Ghost and divine guidance served as a spiritual witness to him of the truth of the Latter-day Saint faith. These experiences are cited as the source of the spiritual fortitude that enabled him to endure the subsequent hardships of the handcart journey and the challenges of pioneer colonization.
