Langley Allgood Bailey: A Survivor of the Martin Handcart Company of 1856

Langley Allgood Bailey (1838–1929) was a Latter-day Saint pioneer and missionary to Great Britain who, as a young English convert, emigrated to Utah with the Martin Handcart Company of 1856—the company caught by early winter storms on the high plains of Wyoming. Many in that company perished; those who survived bore the rest of their lives the marks of their rescue by the Willie and Martin rescue parties sent by Brigham Young. Langley kept a journal of his pioneer and missionary experiences (now preserved at BYU's L. Tom Perry Special Collections and the Church History Library), a record of a young man who walked through snow and starvation to gather to Zion, and who lived to testify of the Lord's deliverance. His life is one of many quiet witnesses of the Martin Handcart Company's faith.
