Elder Carlos H. Amado: The First Guatemalan General Authority and His Testimony of Overcoming Adversity

Elder Carlos H. Amado was the first Guatemalan to serve as a General Authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy in 1989 and served until 1992. In his October 1989 general conference address, 'Overcoming Adversity,' Elder Amado bore testimony born of a life of faith in Central America: 'Christ has suffered more than any of us, and He knows our sufferings.' He told of arriving in Mexico City as a General Authority and of the hardships and faith of the Saints in Central America, where the work was 'booming as members eagerly share their testimonies with their friends.' His service testified that the restored gospel reaches every nation and that the Lord calls servants from among every people.
