The Exponential Explosion of Temple Ordinances — From Two or Three at a Time Under Joseph Smith to 4,000 in a Single Month (1841–1846)

One of the most remarkable numerical trajectories in the Restoration is the exponential growth of temple ordinance work — from a handful of individuals to thousands per month — in the span of just a few years.

UNDER JOSEPH SMITH (Nauvoo, 1841–1844):

Joseph Smith personally administered the full temple ordinances to only a very small number of people at a time. As documented by the Wilford Woodruff Papers Foundation: "Joseph Smith had administered the ordinances to two, three, [or] nine people at a time in Nauvoo." The Prophet carefully and intimately administered these sacred ordinances to a select few — often in single digits — establishing the pattern and conferring the authority upon the Twelve.

AFTER THE MARTYRDOM (1845):

After Joseph Smith's martyrdom in June 1844, the Twelve Apostles, who had received the ordinances from Joseph, began administering them to the Saints in the Nauvoo Temple. The growth was exponential:

• In the first few weeks of the Nauvoo Temple ordinance work (December 1845), approximately 1,000 Saints received their endowments.

• The very next month — January 1846 — the number jumped to 4,000.

• By the time the Saints were driven west, nearly 6,000 endowments had been administered in approximately 60 days.

This represents a numerical explosion from SINGLE-DIGIT administrations (2–3–9) under Joseph Smith to FOUR THOUSAND in a single month under the Twelve — a growth factor of more than 500x in a matter of months. The ordinances that Joseph Smith had administered one by one, in sacred intimacy, were suddenly reaching thousands — exactly as the Prophet had foreseen and prepared for.

Wilford Woodruff, who received his endowment under Joseph Smith's own hands and later spent "five, and sometimes seven days a week" in the temple, recorded the scale of this work. He would later refer to the work of Elijah — the turning of hearts — as "one of the greatest and most important subjects that God has revealed."

This exponential trajectory continued into the Salt Lake Valley era and accelerated under President Woodruff's own administration, reaching hundreds of thousands of ordinances and culminating in the worldwide temple-building program that has now placed hundreds of operating temples across the earth — the literal fulfillment of Joseph Smith's prophecy that the Church would "fill North and South America" and "fill the world."
