Legacy of a Faithful Pioneer

John Mark Hendry lived a full life of service, from his conversion at age 16 to his death on September 26, 1882, at age 46. He was a sergeant in the First Platoon of the First Battalion of Company A of the Cache Valley Brigade militia. His death was caused by an accident while working in the mines. At the time of his death, he was the father of fourteen living children and four deceased children, including a seventeen-year-old son, John, who was buried only five months before. On Sunday, September 10, 1882, two weeks before his death, Bishop William H. Haughan desired all in Sunday School to pray for John Mark Hendry. His faithfulness, sacrifice, and service left a lasting impression on his family and community. He was buried in Wellsville City Cemetery with an estate of over 200 acres of farm land, $1,321.08 in cash, and $1,105.00 in Capital Stock of the Wellsville Co-operative Mercantile Company.
