In 1861, John Mark Hendry and his companions walked to Brigham City (about 20 miles) through mountain territory. When they were attacked by Indians and tied down with spread eagle on the ground, John was recognized by an Indian he had previously shown kindness to. The Indian intervened, untying them and allowing them to escape unharmed. John was noted for his exceptional hospitality to young and old, and his kindness had literally saved his and his companions' lives.
