Jacob Norton: Captain of the 12th Ten—Leading the 1847 Vanguard with Faith and Detailed Record (1847)

Jacob Norton was born August 11, 1804, in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and remained faithful through all the trials of the early Church. When the Saints were driven from Nauvoo and forced westward in 1846, Jacob Norton stood with them.

In the spring of 1847, Brigham Young called the Vanguard Company—a select group of faithful Saints who would lead the way to the Great Basin and establish Zion in the Rocky Mountains. Norton Jacob was chosen as Captain of the 12th Ten, a leadership position of significant trust and responsibility.

What makes Jacob Norton's experience a singular miracle is not one dramatic moment, but rather the preservation of an exceptional historical record. From 1844 to 1852, Norton Jacob penned a detailed nine-year diary that provides one of the finest eyewitness accounts of Mormon history. His 1847 vanguard expedition record is so keenly observed and richly detailed that historians recognize it as exceptional among all the great trail narratives of westward emigration.

Norton Jacob wrote when "one in every two hundred fifty emigrants jotted down the details of his or her journey." His willingness to record—day by day, mile by mile, spiritual experience by spiritual experience—stands as a gift to posterity. His diary documents not only the physical accomplishments of the 1847 journey, but the spiritual transformation of those who made it. It captures the faith of ordinary people choosing to follow God into the wilderness, led by a prophet who had been murdered, following a dream larger than any earthly comfort.

Jacob Norton's legacy is twofold: he was a faithful leader of a ten in the pioneer company, and he became a chronicler whose meticulous record allows us to understand, even now, what the early Saints experienced and believed.
