Henry Standage: Three Waterless Days in the Arizona Desert — A Company B Soldier's Documented Survival (1846)

Henry Standage (1818–1899) was a private in Company B of the Mormon Battalion, and he kept a detailed journal of the entire march from Council Bluffs to San Diego. His account is one of the most important primary documents of the Battalion's experience.

The most severe trial of the entire march came in December 1846, when the Battalion crossed the Arizona desert between the Tucson area and the Gila River. The waterless stretch tested every soldier to the breaking point. Standage recorded in his journal the desperate hours after leaving Mountain Springs:

'After leaving Mountain Springs we traveled through the waterless waste for 45 or [more] miles without water. Not a drop of water could be obtained, and what made it still worse for us, a great part of this distance the road was down a deep sand.'

The soldiers marched on foot through extreme heat, their supplies dwindling, their thirst becoming unendurable. Multiple diarists recorded that the Battalion column was tested by this crossing as by nothing else on the route. The thirst was so severe that men began to fail. Some lay down unable to continue.

Yet Standage's journal testifies to the faith that sustained them. As the soldiers pushed forward through the waterless waste, they believed God would deliver them to the Gila River. On December 21, 1846, they arrived at the river—alive. Of the 335 soldiers who marched the full 2,060 miles from Council Bluffs, nearly all survived the waterless crossing because they kept moving, kept praying, and kept believing.

Standage's journal is the documentary witness to what the Battalion soldiers experienced: a physical ordeal that tested faith to its absolute limit, and a deliverance that confirmed their trust in God.
