Samuel Dice: Private, Company D — A Quiet Witness Whose Completion of the Mormon Battalion March Was Its Own Testimony of Faith (1819–1891)

Samuel Dice was born around 1819 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company D under Captain Nelson Higgins, completing the full march from Council Bluffs to San Diego.

Company D included some of the Battalion's most prolific journal writers — Hampden Beatie and Robert Bliss among them — whose records provide a granular account of Company D's daily life on the march. Samuel Dice was part of the community those journals describe: a man present at the same prayer meetings, the same administrations to the sick, the same moments of trial and deliverance that his fellow soldiers recorded.

The Arizona desert crossing that Company D endured — three days without reliable water, in extreme heat, across terrain that offered no mercy — was survived by every Company D soldier who had not already been sent to the Sick Detachments. Samuel Dice was among those who made it through. He arrived at the Gila River alive, having endured what William Coray described as survivable only through divine intervention.

After his discharge in July 1847, Dice returned to Utah and settled there. He married, raised his family, and contributed to the pioneer communities of the Great Basin. He lived out decades of quiet, consistent discipleship in the faith that had sustained him on the march.

Samuel Dice died around 1891 in Utah. His name on the Company D muster roll, confirmed against the National Archives records, is his permanent place in the story of the Mormon Battalion.
