Dorr P. Curtis: Private, Company D — Mormon Battalion Veteran Whose Endurance Across Desert and Mountain Was a Living Testimony (1821–1896)

Dorr P. Curtis was born around 1821 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company D under Captain Nelson Higgins, completing the full march from Council Bluffs to San Diego.

Company D was one of the Battalion's five companies to complete the full march without major attrition. Captain Higgins maintained the spiritual disciplines of the march — the evening prayers, the administrations to the sick, the Sabbath observance — alongside the military requirements. Dorr Curtis served in that environment for the duration of the march: approximately eight months of sustained faith under extreme physical pressure.

The Arizona desert crossing remains the most documented spiritual crisis of the entire march. Multiple journal-keepers — Bliss, Beatie, Coray — recorded that the column survived that crossing against reasonable expectation, and the consistent testimony of the surviving soldiers was that God had preserved them. Curtis was in that desert. He walked those three waterless days. He arrived at the Gila River alive.

After his discharge in July 1847, Curtis returned to Utah and settled there. He participated in the pioneer community, attended his ward, and raised his family in the faith he had marched to sustain. He is recorded in Utah settlement documents in the decades following the Battalion's discharge.

Dorr P. Curtis died around 1896 in Utah. His name on the Company D muster roll is his enduring witness — a man who answered the call and kept going.
