George Washington Bradley: Private, Company B — Battalion Veteran and Utah Pioneer Who Answered Every Call (1820–1888)

George Washington Bradley was born in 1820 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company B, completing the full march from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California.

Bradley was part of the column that crossed the three-day waterless desert in Arizona — one of the most harrowing stretches of the entire march, where William Coray wrote that 'nothing could have saved our lives but the unseen hand of Almighty God.' Bradley endured this crossing alongside his Company B colleagues and arrived at the Gila River alive.

After his discharge in July 1847, Bradley returned to the Salt Lake Valley and became one of the early Utah settlers. He participated in the building of the communities that spread across the territory in the decades following the pioneer arrival, answering calls from Church leadership to help settle new areas as the Saints expanded their footprint in the Great Basin.

For the men of the Battalion, the march itself was understood as a covenant act — they had given a year of their lives to God and country, and most of them spent the rest of their lives in consistent service to both. Bradley's post-Battalion life followed this pattern: a man who had marched on faith continued to build on faith.

George Washington Bradley died in 1888 in Utah, having witnessed four decades of Utah settlement. He had been part of the founding generation — a soldier and a pioneer — and his descendants inherited a story of faith, endurance, and obedience.
