William Hyde's Mission Dream: Bearing Testimony by the Voice of Angels While Sailing to Hawaii (1853)

William Hyde (1818–1874) was an early Latter-day Saint missionary who served in the eastern states, marched with the Mormon Battalion, and in 1853 was called to serve a mission in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii).

On March 8, 1853, aboard the ship bound for the islands, Hyde felt strong symptoms of smallpox, which was breaking out among the passengers. He recorded: "I besought the Lord in the fervency of my spirit, and He heard my prayer and delivered me."

Two nights later, on the night of March 10, he received a remarkable dream. "I dreamed of preaching, and in my dream the Spirit of the Lord was upon me, and I bore record that I know that the work in which I was engaged was true by the voice of the spirit, and by the voice of Angels, which I had seen in vision." He testified in the dream that he had been redeemed and would "be crowned with those who had overcome." Though he said "the more part of the dream was taken from me" upon waking, his joy was great, and he closed the entry with a declaration of faith that the Lord preserves those who trust in Him and "will raise them up at the last day, for he has shown me this by his Spirit."
