William White, an Elder, was injured nine weeks prior to his letter on March 11, 1881. Despite suffering, he expresses his desire to fulfill his missionary duties and expects to be able to walk again through faith and the blessing of God.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 43, No. 13, 28 March 1881, p. 206):
I have been laid up for nine weeks with a broken leg, but I am now getting better, and I hope to be able to walk again soon, through the blessing of God and the faith of the Saints.
In Their Own Words
“It is nine weeks ago on the 24th instant that I got hurt, and I have felt very bad many times at not being able to fulfil my promises to meet G. S. Grant as expected. My desire is to be able to walk my rounds and fulfill my missionary duties, and I hope to soon be able to do so through faith and the blessing of God. — Millennial Star 43:13”
