In 1889, William O'Neill was working in a tunnel when it caved in, burying him beneath thirty feet of earth. Fearing he would die, he prayed to the Lord to spare his life and promised to serve Him. Elder Daniel Murchy, who was elsewhere, felt specifically impressed to go to the tunnel rather than to the worker's home. He led the rescue efforts and found William alive. The experience became a turning point in William's life and led to his eventual missionary service.

In Their Own Words

“While working in a tunnel one day an unexpected cave-in took place, and I found myself buried beneath fully thirty feet of earth. I felt sure my hour had come to leave this world, and the reflections of a misspent life began to crowd themselves upon me thick and fast. In the twinkling of an eye there passed before me in panoramic order the different scenes of my life. I reviewed all my foolishness, my imperfections, and wrong-doing, and my misery cannot be described. In my heart I began to pray to the Lord to spare my life yet a little longer to my family, assuring Him that if He would deliver me from this death, I would serve Him all the days of my life. He heard and answered my prayer. There happened to be working with me at the time of the accident a Swedish gentleman, but being very hoarse from the effects of a cold, he wasn't able to call for assistance. He ran as fast as he could to my house and informed the family, and my children began to scream. There were two men working some distance away up the mountain, and hearing the screams of the children, one of them ran towards my dwelling; the other man, however— Elder Daniel Murchy, at present residing in Park City—felt impressed to run to the tunnel, and when he got there he learned the reason why he was impressed to go to the tunnel instead of to the house. With assistance he succeeded in getting me out, and they were all astonished to find me alive. This proved the turning point in my life. — The Young Woman's Journal 7:6”
