William Horne Dame — Divine Prompting During the Black Hawk War
Published August 31, 2026 at 12:14 AM
During the 1860s, while serving as a Colonel in the Iron County militia during the Black Hawk War, William Horne Dame was leading a detachment of men through the rugged terrain of Southern Utah. According to accounts preserved in his DUP biography, Dame received a distinct spiritual impression or 'prompting' to alter the company's planned route or camp location. By heeding this internal warning, the militia avoided an ambush by hostile forces who were lying in wait along the original path. This preservation of his men was attributed to the gift of discernment and the protection of the Lord over the pioneer defenders during a time of conflict.
