Seventeen-year-old William Durrant broke his leg above the ankle while walking to a sheep camp in American Fork Canyon. He lay on a hillside in a drenching rain for 36 hours. Driven to desperation, he made crude crutches from sticks, crawled four miles to some cabins, and was discovered by a chance party of campers seeking shelter from the rain.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 48, No. 40 (4 October 1886), p. 639):
A boy named William Durrant, 17 years of age, while on his way to a sheep camp in American Fork Canyon, broke his leg above the ankle. He lay on the hillside in a drenching rain for 36 hours, when, driven to desperation, he made some crutches of sticks, and crawled four miles to some cabins, where he was found by a party of campers who had gone there to shelter from the rain.

He lay upon the hillside in the midst of a drenching rain for thirty-six hours, suffering the utmost agony from: his broken limb, At the end of that time, and becoming desperate at the thought of passing another night under such circumstances, he crawled toa clamp of brush near by and cut wo sticks which he used as and made his way four miles to some uninhabited cabins. He dragged himself into one of them and laid down to die) but was rescued by u chance party of campers who were driven to the. aholtéc of the cabins by a heavy rain storm. He was taken home, and it nursing will restore him — Millennial Star 48:40”
