During a missionary journey in 1834, Wilford Woodruff was struck with a severe case of bilious fever in German-town, Indiana, and was sick unto death. Through the mercy of God, he recovered. Later, while in New York, he contracted severe chills and fever, and was near death when his father came to see him. Despite his father's belief that Wilford would not survive to leave, Wilford recovered sufficiently to travel to his father's home in Farmington, arriving on September 21, 1834.
In Their Own Words
“I left him in Germantown, Wayne County, Indiana, in the hands of a merciful God and a kind and benevolent family, who promised to do everything in their power to make him comfortable until his recovery. This they did, though he passed through a severe course of the bilious fever, and was sick unto death. Through the mercy of God, however, he recovered from his sickness, and continued his labors. We next met in the city of New York. I was then laboring in the ministry, and he was there on business. On his death-bed he sent me a request that I would preach his funeral sermon. I was having the chills and fever at the time, attended with very severe symptoms, and my father thought that I would never leave the house. He brought me word of the death of my uncle, and the day came for the funeral. I told my father to get his horse and buggy for I was going to attend the funeral. He thought it was impossible for me to go, but I insisted upon it. I got into the buggy and rode to the place of the funeral, and preached the sermon. The day following, I felt sufficiently recovered to continue my journey, and I arrived at my father's house in Farmington, on the 21st of September, 1834.”
