During a recent explosion of fire-damp at a colliery in Merthyr Tydvill, South Wales, several Latter-day Saints were working in the pit at the time. Despite the destruction, none of the Saints were injured, an event which the editorial describes as a signal deliverance and an instance of the special protection of the Most High. A follow-up report in the 15 September 1845 issue records that the Saints regularly employed in the pit were absent at the time of the explosion, having been warned by vision of the coming catastrophe — while individuals who had persecuted the Saints and demanded a sign were among those destroyed, and the Saints were afterward called upon to assist in recovering the bodies.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 6, No. 6 (1 September 1845), p. 96):

A short time ago, a colliery in Merthyr Tydvill, South Wales, was destroyed by an explosion of fire-damp. Several of the Saints were employed in the pit, but, by a signal deliverance, not one of them was injured. It is a remarkable fact, that the Saints who were regularly employed in the pit, were absent at the time of the explosion, having been warned by vision of the coming catastrophe; while those who had been persecuting the Saints, and demanding a sign, were among those destroyed. The Saints were afterwards called upon to assist in recovering the bodies.

In Their Own Words

“We lately recorded the explosion in the colliery at Merthyr Tydvill, south Wales; we have since received a letter from elder William Henshaw, who presides over the conference in that neighbourhood, which states that “a many of the Saints were at work in the pit at the time of the explosion, not one of whom was injured, for which they feel truly thankful to the Heavenly Father.” This was certainly a signal deliverance, and when the Saints are in the discharge of their duty in the last days—when they are occupying the right position, they shall realize many instances of the special pfotection of the Most High, as his judgments are poured out upon the nations; but it is on these conditions only, and after the Lord has given us a commandment to flee to Zion in the last days, and told us that there should be deliverance, and we neglect to arise and obey the commandment of the Lord when we have the opportunity ; we shall look in vain for special manifestations of his favour on our behalf. — Millennial Star 6:6”

“The Saints who regularly were employed in the pit, were not there at the time of the explosion. They had been warned by vision, of the catastrophe, and absented themselves from their work. — Millennial Star 6:7”
