A woman, a member of the Church visiting in Walsall with her parents, became critically ill. She underwent an operation but was so severely ill that doctors could not safely administer chloroform. Elders were called to administer to her. Her non-member husband witnessed the recovery and noted that death had appeared to have set its seal upon her, yet she recovered.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72, No. 10 (March 10, 1910), p. 155):
A young lady, a member of the Church, who was visiting in Walsall with her parents, was taken seriously ill. She underwent an operation, but was so weak that the doctors could not safely administer chloroform. The Elders were called in to administer to her. Her husband, who is not a member of the Church, was present, and he says that death had appeared to have set its seal upon her, but she recovered.
In Their Own Words
“The case was that of a woman belonging to the Church and whose husband is not a member. She was taken very ill while visiting in Walsall with her parents, and called in the elders to administer to her as the Lord has directed. A short time afterwards her husband wrote to the brethren, and among other things said: "I am a living witness that to all intents, death appeared to have already set its seal. She underwent an operation, but was so far gone that the doctors dare not administer chloroform. She is getting along nicely," and the husband says, in conclusion: "May God bless you and sustain you, giving you that strength of will that will enable you to do your duty fearlessly and hopefully." — Millennial Star 72:10”
