W. Higgins, serving in the Crimean War, reports a narrow escape while stationed in the camp before Sebastopol, attributing his safety to the Lord.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

Camp before Sebastopol, June 14th, 1855. Dear Brother—I take this opportunity of writing to you, to let you know that I am well, and I hope these few lines will find you the same. I have been in the trenches several times, and have had some very narrow escapes. One night, while I was on duty, a shell came and burst close to me, and a piece of it struck my knapsack, and tore it all to pieces, but, thank the Lord, it did not hurt me. I had a very narrow escape myself. I hope you will excuse this letter, as I know my writing is not very good, but to sit down on the floor with my knapsack on my knees to write is not very convenient. We have had some very hard work, but we have had plenty of food, and the weather is getting very warm. I now conclude in hopes that the Lord will spare us to meet, to see that happy day when I shall be back in England. Yours truly, W. Higgins.

In Their Own Words

I now conclude in hopes that the Lord will spare us to meet, to see that happy day when I shall be back in England. — Millennial Star 17:30”
