An unnamed elderly sister who had desired to go to Zion for twenty years but believed she was too poor to pay tithing, was encouraged by Elder Standley H. Rich to observe the law of tithing. After she and her daughter began paying, a wealthy neighbor unexpectedly loaned them ninety pounds to pay for their emigration to America.

In Their Own Words

“About eight months ago a good, old sister said to me, "Brother Rich, my one desire for the last twenty years has been to go to Zion. Now why have I not been permitted to go?" On inquiry, I found that she was one of those who were "too poor" to observe the law of tithing. Her husband was not able to work and it took all she and her daughter earned to run the house. I turned to "the law and to the testimony" and pointed out how blessings were often gained by seeming sacrifices. I told her that the Lord had promised to open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing that there should not be room enough to receive it, if His people would only bring their tithes into the storehouse. She had never looked upon tithing in that light before, and she decided that from that time on she would pay her tithing even though she suffered herself. She and her daughter paid me some money that night, and I went back to my lodge. To my surprise a few days later I received a letter from the sister, saying that a neighbor who was quite well-to-do had come to her and, without her asking, had loaned the family ninety pounds to enable them to emigrate to America. This is only one of the many testimonies I have received of the truth of the Gospel and the promises of the Lord to those who keep His commandments.”
