While wrestling with the decision to convert to Christianity and the burden of abandoning her ancestral religious practices, Ume received comfort and strength, and felt the power of God in her prayers.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

I was born in Japan, and was taught to worship many gods. I had a family shrine in my home, and I was very faithful in my worship. But I was not happy. I felt that there must be a better way. I heard of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and I began to investigate it. It was a hard struggle for me to give up my old religion. My family and friends were against me. They said I was forsaking my ancestors. But I felt that I must follow the truth. I prayed to God for guidance, and He answered my prayers. He gave me peace and comfort. I felt His presence, and I knew that He was with me. I was baptized, and I have never regretted it. But I know of a greater sacrifice. Instead of worshiping many gods at the family shrine I now worship one only God and His Son Jesus Christ who gave His life that all mankind might be saved. Think of the wonderful sacrifice that He made—voluntarily giving His own life for all the world's people—even for me. How could I refuse to accept what He did for me?
