A train collision occurred on the Central Pacific on the 24th of April, where a standing train was struck by another train from a different direction. Four engines were destroyed, but all passengers and crew survived because the men jumped off before the impact occurred.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 49, No. 21, May 23, 1887, p. 331):
On the 24th of April, a collision occurred on the Central Pacific, a standing train being run into by another from an opposite direction. Four engines were smashed, but all the passengers and crew escaped, as the men jumped off before the collision took place.
In Their Own Words
“There was a smash-up on the Central Pacific at the end of April. A train was standing on the main track and was run into by another train from another direction. Four engines were reduced to an incomprehensible mass of iron, but fortunately nobody was hurt. All the men jumped off before the collision occurred. — Millennial Star 49:21”
