Thomas Durham — Inspired Performance for Brigham Young
Published August 31, 2026 at 12:10 AM
In 1870, during a visit by President Brigham Young to Parowan, Thomas Durham was prompted to lead the Parowan Choir in a specific arrangement of 'Hard Times Come Again No More.' At the time, the settlers were struggling with extreme poverty and the harsh conditions of the Cotton Mission era. The performance was reported to have been attended by a remarkable spiritual influence that moved the entire congregation and President Young to tears. The event was documented as a 'remarkable providence' that provided the spiritual fortification and morale necessary for the pioneers to continue their colonizing mission in Southern Utah.
