During a period of extreme food scarcity in the early years of the St. George settlement, Susanna Porritt Barnes found her family's food supply reduced to a very small amount of flour. Facing the prospect of starvation for her children, she offered a fervent prayer for provision. Despite the small quantity, she continued to bake bread, finding that the flour lasted far longer than was naturally possible, sustaining her household and even allowing her to share with neighbors until new supplies arrived. This event is recorded in her DUP biography as a specific instance of divine multiplication of resources in response to faith.
