Susanna Porritt Barnes — Divine Provision of Flour during the Dixie Famine
Published August 31, 2026 at 5:14 AM
During the early years of the St. George settlement, often referred to as the 'starving time,' the Barnes family faced extreme food shortages. With her husband away or working under difficult conditions to establish the Cotton Mission, Susanna found herself with no food left to feed her children. After preparing the very last morsel of food available, she knelt in fervent prayer, pleading with the Lord for sustenance. Shortly after her prayer, a knock came at the door, and a man—prompted by the Spirit to share his own meager supplies—presented her with a sack of flour. This timely provision saved the family from hunger and was documented by Susanna as a direct answer to her prayer.
