While living in Hatley, Quebec, Sarah Studevant Leavitt had a profound spiritual experience that resulted in the transformation of her entire community. She had a vision of damned spirits in hell that filled her with such horror she was almost unable to bear it. She cried to the Lord day and night until she received an answer of peace and a promise that she would be saved in the Kingdom of God—a promise that sustained her through all the changing scenes of her life. Later, after this experience, two of her husband's aunts came to her house talking about being slighted for not being invited to a quilting. Sarah, concerned only with knowing and doing the will of God, had no relish for such talk. When they asked her opinion, she responded that she didn't know or care about the quilting—all she cared for was to know and do the will of God. Her testimony of this spiritual experience spread through the neighborhood, and the result was that the entire neighborhood was convinced that the manner in which they had spent their time was wrong. Instead of taking the name of God in vain, they cried to Him for mercy, and the whole course of their former lives was abandoned. This single individual's faith and testimony had a ripple effect that transformed her entire community's spiritual direction.
In Their Own Words
“I was living in Hatley, Lower Canada, in the year 1823. I had a vision of the damned spirits in hell, which filled me with such horror that I was almost unable to bear it. I cried to the Lord day and night, until I received an answer of peace, and a promise that I should be saved in the kingdom of God, which promise has sustained me through all the changing scenes of my life. Some time after this, two of my husband's aunts came to my house, and began to talk about being slighted, because they were not invited to a quilting. I had no relish for such talk, for I was concerned only to know and do the will of God. They asked me what I thought about it. I told them I did not know, and I did not care anything about the quilting; all I cared for was to know and do the will of God. My testimony of this spiritual experience spread through the neighborhood, and the result was that the entire neighborhood was convinced that the manner in which they had spent their time was wrong. Instead of taking the name of God in vain, they cried to Him for mercy, and the whole course of their former lives was abandoned.”
