While on a mountain trail, a young woman named Frances and a stranger, Horace Ballard, have an initial conversation in which she expresses her prejudice against the stranger's presence as a representative of a mining company. After she reveals she is a Latter-day Saint, Ballard reacts with immediate, intense, and hostile anger, stating he would like to 'strangle the whole bunch' because Latter-day Saint missionaries 'lured' his sister into the Church.
In Their Own Words
““Would you mind telling me what you are?” “Not in the least”. She lifted her head and let her deep brown eyes look straight into the grey ones opposite her. “I am a Mormon”. The words were spoken with slow emphasis. She had expected surprise, but she was not prepared for what happened. The man’s face went livid. The grey of his eyes turned to flashing black. He sprang to his feet, his hands clenched and his features working convlusively. He looked down at her in deepest scorn. “A Mormon! By——. I’d like to strangle the whole bunch”: Frances stood up facing him, her eyes also flashing. “And why, sir,” she unflinchingly demanded, “would you like to do a thing like that?” “Because”, he fairly hissed, “a couple of their missionaries lured my sister from me into their rotten church”. — The Young Woman's Journal 27:1”
