Samuel Holister Rogers kept a diary from 1841 to 1886 — 45 years of continuous personal documentation that is among the most comprehensive first-hand records left by any Mormon Battalion member.
The diary begins with his family's conversion to the Church and his missionary experiences, moves through his time in Nauvoo, then documents his 1846 enlistment in the Mormon Battalion and the full march from Iowa to California, and continues through decades of pioneer life in Utah.
Rogers served as a private and kept detailed records of the march's daily realities — the heat, the reduced rations, the sickness, the distances covered. His August 20, 1846 entry was cited by historian L.D. Christiansen in the academic study of the Mormon Battalion's internal dynamics, suggesting Rogers' diary captured not just spiritual experiences but the full complexity of life on the march.
The diary is held in the Church History Library in Salt Lake City and is available on microfilm. BYU's Mormon Battalion research guide specifically cites Rogers' diary as central to understanding the Battalion's experience from 1846 to 1847. The Thomas L. Kane collections at BYU also contain related materials.
For Latter-day Saints, Rogers' 45-year diary is itself a kind of miracle: a common soldier who faithfully recorded his life from mission to Battalion to pioneer settlement, leaving a continuous thread of testimony across nearly half a century. His entries chart not just history but the endurance of faith through it.
