While serving in Agra, India, in 1854, Elder Samuel Amos Woolley (referred to in mission records as S. A. Woomer) and his companion, Truman Leonard, faced significant challenges in their proselyting efforts. The station was highly scattered, making it difficult to reach potential converts. To improve their accessibility, the elders obtained a house located three miles from their previous meeting place and printed new circulars to distribute throughout the area. During the time they were first considering securing this new location, Elder Woolley experienced a night vision. In this vision, he was shown that their efforts would yield little success, specifically that only one man and his wife would attend their meetings. The vision also provided explicit spiritual counsel, instructing the elders to leave the station as soon as it was convenient. These experiences reflected the broader difficulties and discouragement faced by the missionaries in India, where the lack of receptivity among the local population and the restrictions imposed by military authorities frequently hampered their work.

In Their Own Words

“We also obtained the use of a house in another part of the station, some three miles distant from our first meeting place, as this station is very much scattered. We got some more circulars printed, and distributed them over the station, but only one man and his wife came, as I was shown, in a night vision, when we first talked of getting the house. In the same vision, we were instructed to leave as soon as convenient. — S. A. Woolley, Millennial Star 16:12”
