Rose May Hun, an active member of a nonconformist church in Bradford, met Latter-day Saint missionaries Elders Rees and Rynearson in 1906. Despite initial failure to understand their doctrines, she felt a strong, persistent spiritual unrest and conviction. After earnest prayer and investigation, she attended cottage meetings and received a powerful witness of the truth, leading her to sacrifice her home on November 17, 1907, to follow her conscience. She was baptized on December 14, 1907.
In Their Own Words
“I was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1884, and was brought up in a nonconformist church. I was always a seeker after truth, and often wondered why there were so many different churches, all claiming to be right. In the year 1906, I met Elders Rees and Rynearson, who were laboring in the Bradford branch. They explained the gospel to me, but I could not understand it at first. I felt a great unrest in my soul, and I knew that there was something I had not found. I prayed earnestly that my Father in heaven would grant unto me wisdom and knowledge that I might understand the things pertaining to His kingdom. I began to investigate the gospel with a prayerful heart, and with sincere prayers for the Divine Spirit, for we have been told that the things of God are understood only by the Spirit of God. I attended the cottage meetings that were held in the neighborhood of my home, and never in all my life before did I enjoy such a good spirit as I did at those meetings. I realized with every fibre of my being that it is indeed the true work of the Lord in which the saints are engaged, and I resolved with my whole heart to become one with them, even though it cost me my life; for let me say right here, that my people were very bitter and strictly forbade me attending the meetings. I had to sacrifice my home, which I did on November 17th, 1907, for I felt that I must obey the promptings of the Spirit, and I knew that the Lord would provide for me. I was baptized into the Church on December 14th, 1907, and found to my soul's satisfaction that "Mormonism" is what it claims to be, the pure gospel of Christ. I am thankful to my Heavenly Father for the light and knowledge I have received, and I pray that I may be faithful to the end.”
