In 1878, a man named Robert Henderson appeared in Tennessee, preaching the Gospel and teaching an order he called the apostolic order. His arrival was accompanied by a loud explosion heard 35 miles away. He was an expert on scripture, preaching against the Roman Catholic Church and modern denominations, and warning of the falsity of secret combinations. He organized a local group, taught them to pray, and miraculously healed many through administration. He was abstemious, lived on corn bread and buttermilk, refused money or clothes, and claimed to have been preaching for a hundred years. He forewarned others of danger and departed as suddenly as he arrived. The group he organized later joined the LDS Church.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 43, No. 11, 14 March 1881):
In the year 1878, a man calling himself Robert Henderson appeared in the State of Tennessee, preaching the Gospel after what he called the apostolic order. His advent was as remarkable as his manner and teachings. The night he made his appearance there was a great noise, as a terrible explosion, which was heard a distance of thirty-five miles. He was a man of great scriptural knowledge, and preached against the Roman Catholic Church and all modern denominations, and warned the people against the falsity of secret combinations. He organized a local group, taught them to pray, and performed many remarkable cases of healing under his administration. He was very abstemious, living on corn bread and buttermilk, and would not accept money or clothes from any one. He claimed to have been preaching for a hundred years. He was always forewarned of any danger that was about to happen to himself, and his departure was quite as mysterious as his advent. The group he organized later joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
