Margaret Archibald Hendry was always noted for her exceptional hospitality to the young and old, and showed no hostility to the Indians even when they had endured great hardships together. Despite her poverty, she was generous and kind. She was an active Church member and teacher in the First Relief Society organized in Wellsville. She was a great reader and wonderful knitter—at the age of 80, she knitted 200 pairs of socks for missionaries and soldiers. She presented one beautiful afghan with yarn of her own spinning to the Primary. This demonstrates her lifetime commitment to service, sacrifice, and spiritual devotion to the Church and community, even while managing the hardships of pioneering life.
