David P. Kimball was lost in the Arizona desert south of Wickenburg for four days without food or water. Upon his return, he related that he had been visited by his deceased father, Heber C. Kimball, who told him he must accompany him and warned him to put his house in order. David pleaded for two more years of life, which were granted. He died exactly two years later in St. David, Arizona, in November 1883.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in Solomon Farnham Kimball, Life of David P. Kimball, and Other Sketches (Salt Lake City: Deseret News, 1918), 105-106.):

In the year 1881, David P. Kimball, while crossing the desert in Arizona, lost his way. For four days and nights he wandered without food or water, and was reduced to such a state of exhaustion that he laid himself down to die. While in this condition, he saw his father, Heber C. Kimball, who had been dead for a number of years, standing before him. His father said: 'David, you must come with me.' David replied: 'Father, I cannot go yet; I have a family to look after, and I want to live a little longer.' His father then said: 'Well, if you will put your house in order, you may live two years longer.' David promised to do so, and the vision disappeared. He was soon after found by some of his brethren, who were searching for him, and was taken to his home. He lived exactly two years from that time, and died in St. David, Arizona, in November, 1883, having, as his friends testify, 'put his house in order' in accordance with the promise he had made.

In Their Own Words

“He was lost on the desert in Arizona a couple of years ago, and after his return he related to his family and friends that during his absence he had been visited by his father, who had been a number of years dead, and told that he must accompany him. David, however, plead to be allowed to live two years longer, and the privilege was granted. It was just two years from that time that he died. — Millennial Star 45:52”
