While serving as a soldier in France during WWI, Private Douglas Shepherd and five comrades were caught in an outpost during a heavy artillery barrage. Fearing for their lives, Shepherd placed a postcard-sized photograph of the Prophet Joseph Smith on the edge of the shell hole, telling the men that no shell would touch them as long as the picture remained there. They all survived the experience unscathed. Shepherd later left the card on the edge of the hole for others.

In Their Own Words

“On one occasion five other fellows and 1 were caught in an outpost, when our gunners put over their record barrage. The Germans also put over their barrage. Our shed's were churning the ear th, as if Hades had been opened. Every second for three hours I thought that we were going to be blown into eternity. But I remembered how God delivered His people formerly. Not one of us spoke a word for about two hours. We were just waiting for death. . . Finally, I took the picture of the Prophet Joseph from my pocket, and said, 'Look here, boys; as long as this postcard sticks on the top of the hole, no shell will come our way.' . . . The outcome was that we all came out of that hole safe and sound, and I left the card sticking on the edge of the hole, for the benefit of others who might come there after us, and I hope they will be as lucky as we were. — Millennial Star 80:11”
