During a winter sleigh-ride in the canyon, Principal Carberry's horse became unruly and bolted, racing ahead of the other sleighs on a narrow, dangerous road with a steep drop to the river. The occupants of the bob in which Patricia rode, seeing the danger, prayed fervently for his safety. Principal Carberry was guided past the other sleighs on a dangerous curve and the horse slowed down, preventing an accident.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Young Woman's Journal, vol. 30 no. 12 (December 1919), p. 714):

When it passed the bob in which Patricia rode with Jack McQuarrie, Cora, and their crowd, Jack, recognizing the principal’s cutter, sprang to his feet and exclaimed: “He can’t make it. That curve is just ahead.” “He must make it,” Patricia said with a sob. “He must make it. He has been so good to all of us. And we need him so.” Instantly the two girls and all occupants of the bob closed their eyes and prayed with all the fervor of their hearts that their principal’s horse might be guided past the bobs on the dangerous curve, and save their loved teacher, But Jack was right! He couldn’t make it—alone! Yet the power of their young prayers performed the miracle of prayer and Principal Carberry swung into the open ahead of the first bob; and the horse, satisfied, slowed down to an easy trot.
