President Lorenzo Snow's Divine Communions

President Lorenzo Snow, upon entering his eighty-eighth year, is described as being full of spiritual power and frequently having soul communions with the Father, which enables him to lead the people.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in Lorenzo Snow - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints):

After the vote, President Snow shared a sacred experience he had in the Salt Lake Temple. Just days earlier, he had gone to the temple, feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of leading the Church. He testified to his brethren that “his prayer was answered, the Lord manifesting unto him clearly what he should do.” He told the assembled Apostles he had kept his experience to himself at first to see if “the same spirit which the Lord manifested to me was in you.” He was gratified that the members of the Quorum of the Twelve were united.

Following the death of President Wilford Woodruff on September 2, 1898, Lorenzo Snow went to the Salt Lake Temple, donned his temple robes, and knelt at the sacred altar in the Holy of Holies to plead for guidance regarding the burden of Church leadership. After receiving no immediate response, he left the room in disappointment. As he walked through the corridor leading from the celestial room, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him, standing approximately three feet above the floor on what looked like a plate of solid gold. The Savior instructed him to reorganize the First Presidency immediately rather than waiting, as had been the custom with previous successions, and confirmed that he was to succeed President Woodruff. President Snow later shared this experience with his granddaughter, Allie Young Pond, pointing out the exact location in the temple corridor where the event took place, and he subsequently informed the Quorum of the Twelve of these instructions during a meeting on September 13, 1898.
