While traveling by rail from New York to St. Joseph, a company of Saints experienced two separate accidents. First, a luggage van caught fire and was partially destroyed. Later, six cars ran off the tracks; two overturned and were smashed or damaged. No one was killed and no bones were broken, though four or five people received slight bruises. The account attributed their preservation to the overruling hand of God. The record names Andrew Harvey, S. H. Hill, W. W. Raymond, and J. S. Fullmer among those involved.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 28, No. 31 (4 August 1866), p. 494.):

The latter company met with two accidents on the rail between New York and St. Joseph: one of the luggage vans caught fire, and was burnt partially up, but the railway company indemnified those who had lost luggage, for nearly the whole amount; on the other occasion six cars ran off the track, and two of them turned over and were somewhat smashed, but owing to the overruling hand of God, not a person was killed, but four or five were slightly bruised, not a bone was broken. We have, indeed, great cause to be thankful to our heavenly Father for the miraculous preservation of his Saints in this accident.

In Their Own Words
