As Oliver Cowdery worked with Joseph Smith translating the Book of Mormon, he became exceedingly anxious to have the gift of translation conferred upon himself. Joseph inquired of the Lord and received two enlightening revelations in regard to the matter, pertaining to the duties of both Joseph and Oliver (Doctrine and Covenants, sections 8 and 9). These revelations addressed Oliver's desire and gave him understanding of the Lord's purposes and the different gifts He bestows upon His servants. This was a miraculous manifestation of God's willingness to answer the prayers of His servants and to provide revelation and guidance for those called to His work, showing that the heavens are open to those who seek in faith.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
Whilst continuing the work of translation during the month of April; Oliver Cowdery became exceedingly anxious to have the power to translate bestowed upon him: and in relation to this request, I inquired of the Lord, and received the following revelation: [D&C 8]. I also received, at this time, a revelation from the Lord, concerning the three Nephites. . . . After we had received the above revelation, Oliver was very desirous to write for me, and I to write for him; but being unable to accomplish this, we again inquired of the Lord, and received the following: [D&C 9].
