Upon discovering a flash flood in a canyon, mail carrier Ned Brighton raced to prevent the destruction of a dam critical to the survival of the village of Bradley. He arrived just as the flood struck and, through persistent physical effort, held a massive boulder against a leaking plank with a crowbar for hours throughout the night, despite numbness and exhaustion, while praying for the safety of the town and his future. He eventually collapsed, but was found by a stranger and his partner who completed his task, and Ned later learned the dam had been saved.
In Their Own Words
“He drove his crowbar into the bank and braced his feet against the dripping plank, then grasping the bar he held it in place. Water dripped over his arms; his feet were wet; his hands cut and blistered, but he never once thought of abandoning his self appointed task. His one prayer was that he might save the dam. — The Young Woman's Journal 26:2”
