Mrs. Wm. Sterret's providential rescue of her daughter Laura from a well

While Laura Sterret, a ten-year-old girl, was drawing water from a well, the weights gave way, causing her to fall headfirst into the forty-foot deep well containing two feet of water. Her mother, hearing the noise, rushed to the well and immediately descended as if by magic, caught her daughter's head, and held her until additional help arrived to pull both of them to safety.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 52, No. 18, May 5, 1890, p. 287):

A little girl, ten years of age, daughter of Brother Wm. Sterret, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, while drawing water from a well, the weights gave way, and she fell headlong into the well, which was forty feet deep, and contained two feet of water. The mother, who was in the house near by, hearing the noise, ran at once to the well, and finding what was wrong, cried to Laura to hold to the rope, but she answered that she could not: Immediately the mother sprang into the well, descended as if by magic and caught the head of her drowning child. The rope was securely tied round the child’s body and by this time help had arrived, when the mother and daughter were extricated from their perilous situation.
