Mrs. Susan E. Martineau, living in Logan, Utah, observed a squaw dragging an unwilling white child towards the willows of the Logan River. Suspicious, she waited behind a fence for the squaw to pass, at which point two men appeared. Mrs. Martineau alerted the men, who confronted the squaw and rescued the child, who was identified as the two- or three-year-old son of Edwin Curtis of Logan. This incident was noted as a direct intervention of the providence of God to prevent the kidnapping of a white child by Indians, a fate that had befallen other children in the region.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 53, No. 3, 19 January 1891, p. 46):
Mrs. Susan E. Martineau, of Logan, recently observed a squaw dragging an unwilling white child towards the willows of the Logan river. Her suspicions were aroused, and she waited behind a fence for the squaw to pass, when two men appeared. Mrs. Martineau called their attention to the matter, and they confronted the squaw and rescued the child, who proved to be the two or three-year-old son of Edwin Curtis, of Logan. It is thought that the child was being kidnapped, a fate which has befallen other children in this region.
In Their Own Words
“She noticed a squaw going towards the willows of Logan riyer, dragging an unwilling child along by the hand, which behaved unlike an Indian pappoose, and so drew her attention. The child was also covered by an old shawl. Convinced that something was wrong, she crouched behind the fence, waiting for the squaw to come along, then to rush upon her and rescue the child. As good fortune, or more properly the providence of God provided, just as he squaw came to the fence, two men came up.a side street, to whom Mrs. Martineau told her suspicions as to the squaw, who was then hurrying away. They ran to her, snatched away the shawl from the child, and beheld a little white boy, only two or three years old—the son of Edwin Curtis,.of Logan—whom' she nearly succeeded in capturing. — Millennial Star 53:3”
