Elder R. Aveson, feeling discouraged by unfruitful missionary labors, visited the home of Mary Higginson in Barton, who was recently recovered from a severe illness. Mary and her two daughters subsequently became interested in the Gospel, overcoming the distance of walking six to eleven miles to attend meetings, and were eventually baptized along with another investigator, Mrs. Whiles.

In Their Own Words

“Last spring, while tracting at Barton, I called at the residence of a poor but honest woman, named Mary Higginson. I was feeling somewhat discouraged at the time with my apparently unfruitful labors. The lady had just recovered from a severe illness. Asking her to read a Gospel tract, she replied, "I cannot read." "Have you anyone in the house that can?" I inquired. "My little daughter can; she reads the Bible to me every day. But," said she, with a smile upon her countenance, "come in." The opportunity was gladly accepted, and after a pleasant conversation upon the Gospel, I informed her there would be a street meeting in the evening, not far from her residence. At the time appointed she was there. A few days after that I gave an invitation to her daughter to attend one of our lectures, which was accepted. They have been regular attendants at our meetings, having walked from six to eleven miles on the Sabbath. Recently we have had seven baptisms, amongst them Mrs. Higginson and her two daughters.”
