While serving as a missionary in the Netherlands, Alonzo A. Hinckley struggled significantly with the Dutch language. He received the gift of tongues, which allowed him to overcome this barrier. During his mission, he also performed miracles, including the healing of a lame boy and the healing of a very sick woman. He promised the woman that if she would be baptized and exercise faith, she would be healed. Despite the dead of winter, a hole was cut in the ice for her baptism, and she subsequently regained her health and later traveled to Utah.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in Alonzo Arza Hinckley | Religious Studies Center):
He received the gift of tongues after struggling hopelessly with the Dutch language for many weeks. He performed miracles: he healed a lame boy and promised a very sick woman that if she would be baptized and have faith, she would be healed. Accordingly, in the dead of winter a hole was cut in the ice and the ordinance was performed. She regained her health, traveled to Utah, and became the mother of eleven children.
