On January 10, 1892, Mrs. Mary A. Standring of Lehi, Utah, underwent a major surgical operation to remove a fifty-pound multiple cystic tumor. The operation was considered the only hope for saving her life. She successfully rallied from the procedure and was reported on the path to recovery.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 54, No. 6, 8 February 1892, p. 96):
Mrs. Mary A. Standring, of Lehi, Utah, underwent a successful operation on the 10th of January, for the removal of a multiple cystic tumor, which weighed fifty pounds. The operation was considered the only hope for saving her life, and she is now on the high road to recovery.
