In the early 1840s, while living in the Boston area (specifically Lowell or East Boston), Marsena Cannon was a professional daguerreotypist and a sincere seeker of religious truth. He later recounted that before he ever met a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was prepared by a divine manifestation. He saw in a dream or vision the face of a man who would bring him the 'true Gospel.' When Elder Eli P. Maginn, a missionary laboring in the Boston area, arrived and began preaching, Marsena recognized him instantly as the man from his vision. This spiritual confirmation led to his baptism in January 1844. He subsequently moved to Nauvoo and then to Utah, where he became the territory's first resident photographer.

Recording note: No verbatim first-person account of this vision has been located in public archival sources; the story survives as a Cannon family faith-promoting account. Marsena Cannon's career as the Utah territory's first resident photographer and his 1844 baptism in Boston are documented in the Church History Biographical Database and in Daughters of Utah Pioneers collections.
